Stonewalled
In the fall of 2001, the members of Stonewalled came together to form a band with the goal of bringing back the sound of good old rock and roll. As a band who started locally in Athens, GA, the group became known as a southern rockin', good time, party band playing around bars and fraternities. With many different influences, the band has maintained a wide variety of musical styles from country to southern rock to new rock n' roll and have continued to entertain all around the Southeast. In 1992, the drummer Brad Hulen received his first drum kit for Christmas. That same year, Matt Ramsey, one of the lead guitar players, got his first electric guitar for his birthday. Scott Hulen, who is the older brother of Brad, has been best friends with Matt since they were in the same kindergarten class together. Soon after Matt got a guitar and Brad had some drums, Scott picked a bass guitar to add to the mix. This young three piece band jammed in the Hulens basement and played covers of Metallica, Nirvana, Green Day, as well as other bands popular during this era. Matt, who had five years of piano experience as a young child, helped the band along musically while the Hulen Brothers' positive vibes fueled the bands energy. Little did we know at this time that this close-knit threesome would later become the backbone of Stonewalled. In the Spring of 1998, Greg Dunlap, the father of Stonewalled lead singer Chase Dunlap, created a country/southern rock cover band. This band was called Southbound and consisted of Greg as the lead singer, Chase on the bass guitar, and Matt Ramsey and Jeff Rolader as dual lead guitar players. While they were looking for a drummer, Matt called up his old friend Brad Hulen and asked him if he wanted to play some music. The addition of Brad as the drummer finalized the line-up of Southbound. Jeff, who has been friends with Chase since there days in middle school, began playing guitar while he attended Parkview high school, which is the same high school from which all of the members of Stonewalled graduated. Southbound played bars, honky-tonks, and fraternities around Athens and Atlanta for three years until the band broke-up. Greg wanted to continue playing covers while the rest of the band desired to develop an original sound with a style leaning more towards rock and roll. Soon after Southbound called it quits, the boys continued to play music but were lacking a good lead singer. After trying several different singers, the band decided that there best line-up was with Chase as the singer, who was reluctant to sing when the band first formed. Chase had to be coaxed into singing and soon everything fell into place. This called for a new bass player to be added to the band. Brad talked to his brother Scott, who is known as "Slim" to those who are closest to him, and asked him to play bass for the band. Slim gladly accepted the invitation and the band Stonewalled was created. Somehow, the boys from Stone Mountain, Georgia who grew-up practically right next to one another all came together to form a bad-ass, whiskey-drinking, southern rock and roll band.
